Both debossing and embossing are similar methods of embellishment that require a specially made metal die that is pressed into the garment. The differences between the two will be explained in detail below:
Debossing: This process only uses one heated die. It presses from above into the garment leaving an indent. Depending on the garment, it actually may come out shiny leaving a minimalist shiny logo. This method is popular with polos for high-end companies.
Embossing: This is the most common method of the two. We use two heated dies, one to press up from underneath and one above for it to press into and sandwich the garment in between. These heated dies form the garment into the shape of your design/logo.
These embellishment options are both great for subtlety or to bring your design to another level. You can use debossing as a unique, clean, and simple option for work uniforms. Embossing is a great option to add a 3D effect to your custom apparel that will make you stand out.
Embroidery is the art of decorating a piece of apparel with a needle and thread or yarn creating beautiful visual representations of different types of art. There are multiple unique ways to use embroidery, a few will be listed below:
3D Embroidery: This process involves placing a piece of foam under the design location before embroidering to add volume. This creates a 3D or puffed look to the embroidery. Embroidering a logo this way adds more depth to your design.
Applique: Our applique option is one of the most unique embellishments we offer. A laser machine is used to cut out a shape, and after that, an embroidery machine will then go over the edge of the fabric to attach it to your custom product.
Flat Embroidery: This technique is the simplest, quickest, and most durable option. The product will have your custom design directly embroidered onto it and look great for years.
Custom embroidered logos look best on polos, jackets, woven shirts, uniforms, t-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, and other forms of custom items. Our embroidery options allow us to customize apparel to fit your needs. The embroidery will bring a new sense of value and durability to all of your custom garments, apparel, and items that you need.
We offer multiple types of laser embellishment to bring a new level of precision to your custom projects, here are some laser options:
Laser Engraving: Engraving is the process of burning away material and leaving a cavity where the design will lay. We use this method on wood products, leather, some plastics, and acrylics.
Laser Etching: Etching is essentially lasering off the top layer of material to leave an imprint. We laser etch on metal water bottles, tumblers, can coolers, custom shipping boxes, fleece jackets, and more.
We can laser etch a custom 12-inch x 12-inch design on the entire left panel of a rain jacket, or laser etch an elegant wine glass with a custom design of your choice. Our materials range from delicate soft surfaces/fabrics such as synthetic fabrics and cotton. Our hard surfaces include glass bottles, cutting boards, shipping boxes, and mugs.
Pressing different materials such as 3D, Cork and Concrete Textures, Metallic/Matte Silicone and others using heat and pressure is a method known as Heat Transferring.
Heat transfers are a cost-effective way to go for small orders or samples to see sizing. They are also great if you would like effects that other options can’t provide. Here are 2 of the most popular options:
Vinyl Heat Transfers: The designated vinyl material is cut out to the required design. It is then heat pressed to transfer the design to the custom apparel. This method is best for one-color or quick turnaround jobs.
Digital Prints: If you have a complex design that does not meet our screen printing or embroidery minimums, digital printing is a great way to go. These transfers are cost-effective and are able to be full color and full size.
Dye Sublimation is the method of applying an image to fabric by printing it onto heat-resistant transfer paper.
Once we press the paper into the garment, it goes into a gas state and infuses into the fabric. We dye-sub on polyester fabrics, fabrics with a 50% or more polyester blend, and specially coated products. There are no limits regarding color with dye sublimation. We will dye sub anything that is flat and is the right material. This means you can greatly expand the kind of apparel/products you can customize.
After a garment has been pressed, it can be washed and will not sustain wear because the fabric is now permanently dyed. This method is great for t-shirts, custom socks, mouse pads, and more!
An easy way to think about this is as a photographic stencil process. A stencil is created and then is used to apply layers of ink directly onto a product. The result is the screen’s image is transferred to the print surface. We have listed some of the coolest screen-printing techniques below:
HD: HD Printing uses a special ink that will hold its shape. We print multiple layers on top of each other to get a design that is reaching off the print surface.
Thermochromic: Simply put, this is a special ink that can change color. A change in temperature, usually cold to hot, will cause this ink to change color. It is a unique way to screen print that is sure to make your custom apparel and design stand out.
Puff: Puff ink is another way to get your custom garments to really pop out. The special additive in this ink causes it to puff up after going through the drier. This is a great way to add depth to your custom apparel.
Clear Gel: Clear gel is used in two ways. You can print directly onto the garment which will make your design more subtle, but obvious. The second way is to print clear gel over your whole already printed design or small details.
UV: UV ink is yet another type of incredibly unique decoration. Usually, we use this to highlight small parts and lines of a design. When you encounter UV light, the whole design will come to life in a special way.
Screen printing is the most versatile decoration technique we offer. We utilize screen printing in many ways due to the number of factors that can be adjusted to reach the desired outcome. It has the ability to be used on a multitude of garments. Everything from hoodies, t-shirts, and long sleeves to cloth tote bags, sweatpants, shorts, work uniforms, safety vests, and more!
Most branded merchandise gets overlooked. It’s printed, worn once, and quickly forgotten.
At Logo Unlimited, we believe your brand deserves better.
That’s why we specialize in in-house embossing! A technique that transforms standard apparel into a premium, unforgettable brand experience.
What is Embossing?
Embossing is a high-end technique where we create a raised design directly into the fabric. Instead of relying on surface-level ink or stitching, embossing uses heat and pressure to mold your logo into the garment itself, adding a tactile, dimensional feel that can’t be ignored.
It’s craftsmanship, not just decoration. And it immediately elevates how your brand is perceived.
Why Most Merch Gets Ignored and How Embossing Changes That
Typical screen-printed shirts and giveaway hoodies rarely get worn twice. They’re seen as disposable.
Embossed apparel feels different, literally.
The texture draws attention. The weight feels deliberate. The design isn’t loud or flashy, yet it stands out in a room full of logos. When someone puts on an embossed piece, they aren’t just wearing a logo; they’re wearing a brand story that was built to last.
In a crowded world, subtlety and quality cut through the noise.
Why In-House Matters
Most companies outsource embossing to overseas factories. We don’t.
At Logo Unlimited, embossing is done in-house, right here in Woodinville, Washington. That means:
Faster turnaround times. No overseas delays
Complete quality control. We oversee every step
True collaboration. You work with the team that will actually craft your merch
This hands-on approach ensures the product you get isn’t just branded. It’s built to represent you at the highest level.
Ideal Products for Embossing
Embossing works best on heavier garments like:
Sweatshirts
Hoodies
Premium fleece apparel
High-end cotton blends
While lighter fabrics and summer apparel have their place, embossed designs shine brightest when applied to materials that can hold depth and texture.

Now is the time to get started. Embossing isn’t an afterthought—it’s a strategy. It takes vision, planning, and a production partner who understands how to turn an idea into something people will actually remember.

In a crowded world of logos and loud designs, subtlety can be a brand’s greatest advantage. When it comes to premium merch, few techniques are as timeless and sophisticated as embossing and debossing.
They’re often confused and even used interchangeably. But the difference between them is more than just direction. It’s about the emotion and experience you create with your merch.
Let’s break it down properly.
What is Embossing?
Embossing is the art of pushing your design up and out of the fabric surface. Through custom molds, controlled pressure, and precise heat, the material itself is reshaped, creating a raised, tactile design you can feel at first touch.
Core Features of Embossing:
3D raised effect without ink or stitching
Clean, minimal, premium aesthetic
Permanent — becomes part of the garment
Best suited for heavier materials like sweatshirts, hoodies, fleece jackets
In the hands of experts (like our team at Logo Unlimited), embossing turns everyday apparel into brand-building pieces people want to wear again and again.
What is Debossing?
Debossing is the opposite move: Instead of raising the design out of the material, debossing presses the design down into the surface.
Think of it like an elegant imprint, a sunken pattern that creates texture by carving into the garment rather than building on top of it.
Core Features of Debossing:
Recessed design (pressed into the material)
Subtle, sophisticated branding style
Equally permanent and long-lasting
Works well on leather goods, heavy textiles, specialty fabrics
Debossing brings a quiet confidence to branding. It’s refined. Understated. Perfect for brands that know power doesn’t always have

How to Choose: Embossing or Debossing?
When deciding between embossing and debossing, it’s not just about looks. It’s about what you want your audience to feel.
✔ Choose Embossing if:
You want a bold, touchable experience
You want your merch to immediately grab attention
You’re targeting active, energetic brand moments (events, launches, team swag)
✔ Choose Debossing if:
You prefer understated, quiet luxury
You want a more traditional, refined presentation
You’re creating gifts, leather goods, or executive apparel
Real Talk: Which One Do People Actually Notice More?
Embossing usually delivers a more instant “wow” factor, especially when you want people to feel and interact with your merch the second they pick it up.
Debossing is ideal when the moment calls for subtlety and sophistication — think executive gifting, premium hospitality branding, or minimalist drops.
At Logo Unlimited, we help brands balance both: Sometimes, even combining techniques across a full product line to match different audiences and vibes.
Final Thoughts
